Japan is getting its first ever direct air link with the Holy Land.

Israeli flag carrier El Al will launch a nonstop route connecting Tokyo and Tel Aviv, starting in March 2020.

Flight reservations will go live soon.

The 12-hour flight will nearly half the current one-stop journey time between the two countries.

The carrier will deploy its new Boeing Dreamliner 787 jets on the route, which will initially run three times a week.

"Japan is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, and now Israelis can visit it via a comfortable direct flight in the new Dreamliner planes. Over the past two years, we have received many requests from our customers to operate direct flights to Japan," Michael Strassburger, El Al's VP of commerce & industry affairs.

Central Bureau of Statistics data says about 40,000 Israelis came to Japan in 2018, while about half as many Japanese visited Israel.
