United Airlines is adding a second daily nonstop service from its San Francisco hub to Hong Kong.

The additional flight begins on October 26 on Boeing 777 jets.

It becomes the number two carrier on the route after Cathay Pacific which operates three times a day to San Francisco.

The new flight is timed to lure more business travellers with a morning arrival in Hong Kong and an evening departure back to the US.

"We look forward to offering customers a schedule that fits their travel needs with convenient times and greater connectivity to United's extensive and growing network," said Patrick Quayle, United's international network VP.

Also, in October, United will start seasonal nonstop flights to Melbourne and new seasonal service to New Delhi in December.

That will take the number of international destinations linked with its San Francisco hub to 29, including 14 in Asia and Oceania.

United operates more than 300 daily flights out of SFO.
