Budget carrier VietJet will start flying to Bali in the first quarter of 2019.

It will link the Indonesian holiday hotspot with Ho Chi Minh City, beginning with four flights a week.

VietJet Air's managing director Do Xuan Quang announced the new route at the 2019 ASEAN Tourism Forum held last week in Ha Long, Vietnam.

Served by Airbus A321 aircraft, the service will be increased to daily later in the year, he said.

A second route connecting HCMC with Jakarta will likely start before the end of the year.

Indonesia is confident the new routes will help funnel Chinese travellers to Indonesia, via VietJet's extensive flight network.

"China's tourists arriving in Vietnam can be directed to Indonesia. Effectively making Vietnam the tourism hub for the China and South Korean market," Indonesian minister of tourism Arief Yahya said.
