Budget carrier Vietjet will shortly launch nonstop flights linking Hong Kong with southern island hotspot Phu Quoc.

Vietjet will offer four flights per week, starting from April 19.

"After nearly three years of operating our HCM City-Hong Kong route, Vietjet has gained the trust of Hong Kong residents and international tourists, and has contributed positively to the promotion of air travel and trade between Vietnam and Hong Kong," said Luu Duc Khanh, Vietjet's managing director.

It becomes the first direct air link between the two destinations.

Phu Quoc is the biggest island in Vietnam and one of Asia's fastest growing tourist destinations.

A spate of global hospitality brands have opened hotels on the island and strong growth in visitor arrivals have been fuelled by a 30-day stay visa-exemption policy.

The new airport has seen a rapid rise in new air routes in the past few years, including long haul seasonal charters from Russia and Europe.
