Philippine Airlines has confirmed a launch date of October 29 for direct flights linking Manila with New York.

PAL's new Airbus A350-900 aircraft, with a flying range of 8,000 nautical miles, will be used on the route.

The A350's will offer free in-seat entertainment and Wi-Fi which is subject to time and volume limits, it said.

It has six A350s on order which will all be delivered within the next 18 months.

"Tourists and 'balikbayans' based in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut will now find it easier and more convenient to visit the Philippines," said spokesperson Cielo Villaluna.

"Prior to the new PAL service, Manila-bound passengers had to go through intermediate stop-overs in Canada, the US West Coast, or airports in other Asian countries, usually by connecting from one flight to another," she added.

The longest route ever served by a Philippines carrier, lasting 16 hours, will initially operate four times a week.
