AirAsia will open the first route linking Thailand with East Malaysia this summer.

Thai Air Asia will begin flying from Bangkok Don Mueang to Kota Kinabalu with three flights a week from August 16.

Flights will operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

"Last year, Malaysians accounted for the second-largest number of foreign visitors to Thailand, and we hope this new service will not only make it easier for those living in Kota Kinabalu to visit Bangkok but also encourage Thais to explore what Sabah and Borneo have to offer," said Santisuk Klongchaiya, CEO of Thai AirAsia.

AirAsia operates nine routes linking Thailand and Peninsular Malaysia serving Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Johor Barhu with Bangkok, Hay Yai, Hua Hin, Chiang Mai, Krabi and Phuket.

"Kota Kinabalu is a high potential tourism market. On top of being an important flight base for AirAsia, serving both domestic and international flights, it is also the gateway to Sabah state and home to splendid natural attractions," Santisuk added.
