United Airlines is adding more flights to Florida from its Washington Dulles hub.

It will start flying once daily from Dulles to Miami beginning December 19 on Airbus A319 jets.

It appears to be a well-timed launch as rival American Airlines ends service on that route the very same day.

United last flew the DC-Miami route in 2014.

During the Christmas and New Year peak period from December 24 through January 6, United will lay on a second daily service.

United also serves MIA from Houston, Chicago, Newark, Denver and San Francisco.

United is also adding more flights to two other Florida vacation hotspots over the peak holiday season.

From November 28 through January 6, 2019 a fifth daily flight to Orlando will operate from Washington Dulles and it will add a fourth daily flight to Tampa between December 26 and January 26.

"We want to make United the first choice for customers when planning travel," said Ankit Gupta, United's vice president of domestic network planning.

"To do this we are focusing on the strengths of our hub cities, which are the largest centers for business and tourism travel in the country and key gateways for customers to easily and conveniently connect.

The carrier says it has now either announced or started flying more than 30 new routes from hub airports around the country during the past four months.
