While some airlines have been scaling back or pulling out altogether, United Airlines remains bullish on the Cuba market.

The airline is seeking approval to boost flights to Havana from its Houston hub to daily service.

It is a big expansion as it flies just once a week at the moment.

The Houston-Havana route was launched in December 2016 with the current Saturday-only service.

"There are a number of synergies between Cuba and Houston when it comes to energy, medicine, education, the arts - even in sports," Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said in a news release.

"United's daily air service from Houston to Havana will greatly increase opportunities to connect family and friends while significantly increasing potential for trade and investment between Houston and Cuba."

United says by moving to daily service it will also help boost Cuba bound traffic from 44 other cities in the Central and Western U.S. that can connect via Houston to Havana.
